Gold Star Mom
Georgia and Patch
Meet Georgia, Gold Star Mom and Salida resident of 30+ years. Former local mail carrier of 15 years, community volunteer, neighbor and friend to many, recently widowed, her only son killed in action overseas. But if you are local to Salida, Colorado, you may know her best by her service dog, Foxy, who was by her side diligently for the past 6+ years. Whether it was a trip to the grocery store, doctor’s appointments, or short walks around town, Foxy was there to assist Georgia with every step.
Georgia was involved in a vehicular collision in 2008 when an SUV blew past a stop sign traveling well over 55mph in a school zone of 15mph. With no time to react, Georgia was struck a total of 4 times before the vehicles came to a stop. Her list of injuries is extensive, essentially crushing the entire left side of her body. Her knee was shattered, shoulder torn, ligaments and tendons in wrist also torn, severe damage to her spine in 2 places, traumatic brain injury (and subsequent thyroid problems), impairment to her vision and hearing, and memory loss. She had 12 surgeries in 4 years to gain back some quality of life, and an additional few in the following years. It took years for her to be able to walk again (or hobble, at least), but she was and still is a fall risk.
Foxy was loved beyond words and truly gave Georgia back some of the quality of life that she had lost. In June of 2024, Foxy succumbed to a genetic disorder that affected her ability to move, and eventually her ability to breathe. She was humanely put down when her condition worsened.
December of 2024, we found Georgia her next service dog, as she has been struggling immensely without Foxy. Her next perfect match is a beautiful and young 2 year old 90lb Yakutian Laika named “Patch,” who is already fully trained and needing a handler just as much as Georgia needs a service dog. Patch comes from the reputable Above the Clouds Siberian Service Dogs in Woodland Park, Colorado. Finding him was like finding a needle in a haystack as he is already task trained for every one of Georgia’s needs and then some!
Georgia attended the Gold Star Grief conference in Durango Colorado! She was asked to speak and attended with her trusty service dog Patch! We were able to raise money to pay for Georgias service dog from ATC Siberian Service Dogs

"I adopted my service husky in 2021 and she has been the ultimate companion and best friend. She has travelled with me domestically and internationally, alerting before I realize I need her and is hands down the best dog and lifetime friend I'll ever have. We love Barrett and Above the Clouds so incredibly much, forever thankful we rescued each other!

Jennifer and Sabbath
May 8th, 2024
Today marks a whole year since Sabbath came home with me! We have experienced quite a lot together in that time. Sabbath continues to be a rockstar and has become really solid in his tasking and responses in a variety of situations. He helps me so much when I am at home, running errands, and going to doctors appointments. Per his training, Sabbath helps me manage both my physical and mental disabilities which makes it possible for me to work and live without needing further interventions and support. He continues to pick up new skills and is always impressing me with his desire to work and help.
There have been a lot of ups and downs with my health this past year, but my doctors and I agree that things have improved overall. I owe a lot of this to Sabbath! Having him in my life has given me so much more confidence to get out more again because I know that he is able to alert to my oncoming episodes before I even start to feel symptoms. One thing I have learned about Sabbath is that no matter what or where he will always makes sure I get to the ground safely. He has made me take breaks in the mud on the side of a trail, on the tops of mountains, when out in the middle of heavy rain & snow, in the aisles of many stores, while running & playing outside, and the list could go on. He is very persistent in his tasking which is something I need in my Service Dog. Sabbath is such a sweet and gentle dog. He is a young husky and can definitely run, hike, walk, and explore for hours but he is also so patient with me and never complains when he has to spend his day laying by my bed. I am so grateful to have him in my life. The ability that he gives me to live independently is invaluable to me! I cannot thank you all enough for your support and generosity in helping me get my new partner home! We have become a pretty solid team in this last year, and I look forward to all that is to come.

Alyssa and Ace
Update on Alyssa and Ace who recently attemded the @raceforpots and the Dysautonomia International conference!
Hi Barrett. I gave your information out to several people at the dysautonomia conference this weekend. Here’s some pics too. We received many compliments on Ace.. his beauty and behavior. We did a ton of training this weekend too. He was learning “focus”, to avoid getting distracted by other service dogs and we’ve been fine tuning skills he already knew.

Loreanny and Icarus
This past year, like many before it, came with its share of challenges and changes. As time passed, age and health concerns became more pressing, and I found myself facing a difficult but necessary decision — it was time to retire my beloved service dog, Teddy. With my medical needs evolving and my energy levels no longer what they once were, I knew I couldn’t go through the demanding process of training another service dog on my own. So, over five years ago, I began the search for a professionally trained service dog. Understanding that the wait for a qualified dog could be several years, I turned to Google — and that’s how I found Above the Clouds Service Dogs (ATC).
From the beginning, Barrett Stensgaard, the founder, stood out. She took time to speak with me at length, explaining her program, training philosophy, and the temperament of her dogs. Though I wasn’t ready for a new dog at the time, she patiently answered every question I had, and her depth of knowledge and compassion made a lasting impression. Years passed, and when I was finally ready to move forward, I reached back out — and to my surprise and gratitude, Barrett remembered me. We picked up right where we left off.
She was transparent about the matching process, explaining that while some dogs might seem like a good fit initially, final placements would depend on how each dog matured. This honesty was incredibly reassuring. The ATC team — Barrett, Tim Stensgaard, Shiloh Grimm, and the entire organization —worked tirelessly to match me with a dog before the start of the school year. I was paired with Icarus, a striking black and white Yakutian Laika, and earlier this month, my husband and I flew to Colorado to meet him.
From the moment we arrived, I was met with kindness, professionalism, and an overwhelming sense of welcome. I was carefully coached on how to work with Icarus, and every step of the transition was handled with thoughtfulness and expertise. When our rental car got a flat tire and didn’t have a spare, Tim even came to our rescue — a gesture that speaks volumes about the character of this team. I also had the privilege of working with Shiloh, an exceptional trainer who brought both insight and warmth to the process. Throughout our visit, Barrett and Tim made sure I felt supported, empowered, and prepared to bring Icarus home. Their dedication is nothing short of inspiring.
ATC welcomed us not just into their program, but into their family. The work they do is not easy — breeding, raising, and training service dogs is a demanding, emotionally intense vocation. And yet, Barrett, Tim, and Shiloh pour their hearts into every dog and every client. What they’ve built is extraordinary. Icarus began alerting and tasking within hours of meeting me — a testament to the rigorous and thoughtful training he received. He is not just a dog; he is a life-changing partner. I will be forever grateful to ATC for their compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication. In a world where true care and excellence can be hard to find, Above the Clouds Service Dogs stands out as a rare and remarkable organization. Barrett and her team are, quite honestly, miracle workers. I believe there are people who are simply meant to be in your life — and the team at ATC is among them.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
